Born in Beirut, Lebanon in 1952, Makhzoumi received his primary and secondary education at the International College in Beirut.
During the oil boom of the seventies of the last century, he decided to study chemical engineering in the United States of America. Within a very short period of time, Makhzoumi obtained his undergraduate (in 1974) and Master of Science (in 1975) degrees, specializing in chemical engineering at Michigan Technological University, Michigan.
Immediately after that, Makhzoumi started in 1975 his business career in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and played a strategic role in developing one of the largest private industrial groups of companies in the Kingdom.
He married May Naamani in December 1975. She had graduated from the American University of Beirut, with a degree in Pharmacy. Their sense of duty to others, their need to succeed for selfless ends, was to become the driver in defining both the way Makhzoumi’s life journey would be realized.
Makhzoumi’s recipe for success has been that a person should devote oneself to a clear vision with a specific objective, especially since all business activities have human dimensions. This is why when he speaks of his employees he speaks not only about them as individuals but also as families. Thus, he feels now responsible not only for 5000 employees but also 5000 families.
In 1982, Makhzoumi’s relentless drive to succeed, allowed him to amass a small fortune, which drove him to contemplate retirement. However a man with such drive, such commitment, and such passion, could not allow but for his ambition to seek greater opportunity and more achievement. In 1984, using his collective wealth, he managed to raise further funds, and acquired, through his Luxembourg holding company "Future Management Holdings SA" ("FMH"), a substantial interest in an industrial company in the United Arab Emirates. He managed and developed it, then turned that company into the core of Future Pipe Industries Group ("FPG"), with specialized subsidiaries spread over 23 countries, including Lebanon, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Italy, France, The Netherlands, Germany, UK, Spain, U.S.A., Thailand and Singapore, amongst others. FPG is now one of the world leading fiberglass pipe manufacturers.
In addition, FMH group’s other immediate interests include subsidiaries operating in the financial, commercial, real estate, consultancy, security, information, multimedia and publishing, as well as research sectors.
Makhzoumi, the Founder and Chairman of FMH, is currently the Chairman of FPG.
The experience gained through the partnership between Makhzoumi and his wife in Saudi Arabia, and the foundation of principles and values they built together became integral in achieving success through this delicate balance of personal and business obligations. It was that un-selfish based partnership that allowed for this formula to triumph.
His wife, May, who had played a critical role from the onset of their marriage in helping Makhzoumi tend to his family duties and realize his vision, managed a career and a household. She demonstrated a beacon for women in the Region and is thus an ideal reflection of how Makhzoumi perceives women’s potential roles in societies, especially in Middle Eastern Societies; as equals, as partners, as priceless contributors to stability in society and sustainability to the economy.
Women, historically and in the most traditional and cultural sense, in the Middle East have been defined as playing very specific roles in the home, and have not been enabled to play an equal role in those societies, even though women constitute at least half of the population of these societies. Accordingly Makhzoumi, has been, through his multiple endeavors, a staunch supporter in his Region, of the empowerment of women to contribute to society in a multi- faceted way, socially, politically, economically, whilst promoting the core essence to any civically progressive society, strong family and moral values which can only ever be attained through the equal partnership of man and woman.
Makhzoumi is not only interested in business but has a wide range of economic, social, and political interests. Currently, and since September 2006, he is a member of the "U.S./Middle East Project". He is since 1996 a member of the International Board of the "Council on Foreign Relations: U.S./Middle East Project". Formerly, he was the President of the International Desalination Association (IDA) between 1995 and 1997. Currently, he is the Controller of the Association. Between 1995 and 1998, he was also Vice Chairman of the Institute for Social and Economic Policy in the Middle East at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
Makhzoumi started his involvement in public affairs after the end of the Lebanese civil war. Given his economic experience and his view that the economy and entrepreneurship are the key drivers for the development of any country and given his refined perception of the political and social conditions of not only Lebanon but the entire Arab world, he developed a keen perception of the impact of the economy on all walks of life. Thus, he made it his task to focus on the redevelopment of Lebanon and the welfare of its people. And therefore he founded in 1997 Makhzoumi Foundation in Lebanon, that has been devoted to charitable and humanitarian works.. Makhzoumi presided over this Foundation between 1997 and 2000, before passing the torch to his wife, May. He is currently its Honorary President. The Makhzoumi Foundation, supported by its US sister, Makhzoumi Foundation (USA), Inc., has provided a substantial number of philanthropic services to the Lebanese people, comprising of vocational training in a great number of fields, allowing trainees to progress in their work fields or find employment and be active members of the society, as well as medical care programs, guidance and awareness programs, agro-forestry and desertification related activities in conjunction with European Union NGOs, as well as a micro credit program. The micro-credit program provides small-scale loans to individuals in order to enable them gradually to finance their own sustainability in life. The micro-credit program at its inception focused mainly on loans to women, to empower them to act as contributors both the financial health of the family unit, and to the greater impact of entrepreneurial activities on the nation’s economy. The micro credit program is primarily carried out with the financial support of the founder, Fouad Makhzoumi. At the outset international organizations such as USAID and CNEWA have helped launching it.
Furthermore, he sponsored a study on "Harnessing Trade for Development and Growth in the Middle East", prepared by a group of experts selected by the US Council on Foreign Relations.
Makhzoumi has made many contributions to the media means: appearing regularly for interviews across multiple media: T.V. Radio, newspapers, and publications, domestically, regionally and internationally. He participates in social, economic, and political debates that are going on in Lebanon, the Arab world and beyond. He is the founder and editor-in-chief of the "Mirror of the Arab Press", the first daily electronic newspaper in English and Arabic with a site on the Internet’s Worldwide Web.
In 2000, Makhzoumi, who is not from a traditional political family, ran for a seat in the Lebanese parliament. Although he did not win, he registered a victory in terms of the votes he received for a first time candidate. This was his first political appearance, and his platform was based on national unity while others employed confessional and sectarian slogans within a heated confessional Lebanese environment.
Believing that change is not centered on an individual act but requires a collective action, Makhzoumi started the process of setting-up a political party. In preparation for this, he set up a think tank of leading specialists in their respective fields to prepare the political program of the party. In August 2004, he, along with other founding members, was given the license to set up the National Dialogue Party.
The objectives of this party can be summarized in the following points: to activate a comprehensive national dialogue that prepares the grounds for political, social, economic and administrative reforms that aim at achieving social justice, balanced development, and equal opportunities in a sound society. To do this, the party works on reinforcing national belonging and good democratic governance as well as the empowerment of all citizens. The party definitely seeks to eliminate confessionalism, sectarianism, corruption, mismanagement and misdistribution of wealth.
